artist statement - Shoichi Akutsu
The work of Shoichi Akutsu is evidence that craft is not only an important aspect of the creative process, but that it is, in fact, the foundation of creativity. His paintings reveal an unusual attitude towards subject matter, composition and perspective, while utilizing a keen sense of observation.
The great Albrecht Durer once said: "Art is embedded in nature; he who can pluck it out possesses it." This quote and its meaning was passed on to me by another great draftsman, George Grosz, when I studied with him at the Art Students League of New York in 1959. Craft is never fad. Meaningful art has nothing to do with fad or hype. Neither does Shoichi’s body of work in his first solo exhibition in New York City at the Allen Sheppard Gallery.
For me it is a reaffirmation that creativity is a balance between craft and personal expression. When both are applied properly, one looks at the painting itself. No explanation is needed because the artist has done his job and expressed himself with paint, his eye, and his heart.
